CHICAGO – Just minutes after winning the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament and earning the program's second national tournament bid, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team continued to secure the good news Saturday night when five of its players earned spots on the 2011 All-CCAC Men's Soccer Team. Senior midfielders Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) and Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) as well as senior defender Dan Cross (Gravesend, England/Axton Chase) were all named first team selections, while senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) and senior defender Sam Vanaria (Orland Park, Ill./Adelphi University/UW-Parkside/Moraine Valley CC/Sandburg) claimed second team honors for SXU.
Heading into Saturday's championship, Palar was the team's scoring leader with 31 points off nine goals and 13 assists over 17 games this season. Cross has been the team's defensive specialist, but did not record any goals or assists. Guzman posted five goals and six assists for 16 points over 18 games this fall. Klancic is one of the team's top scoring threats with three goals and six assists, while Vanaria has been a defensive stopper for the Cougars in all 16 games he has played in 2011.
Saint Xavier (13-8-0 overall/8-2-0 CCAC) now awaits its seed and pairing for the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships, which begins opening round play on Saturday, November 19. The Cougars should learn their opening round opponent and site when the NAIA national office officially releases them early next week.
