CHICAGO – Unlike the weather, Saint Xavier University freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) appears to be warming up as the fall season progresses. Medina scored all three goals to lead the No. 2 seeded Cougars to a 3-0 win over No. 3 seed Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in semifinals action of the 2011 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Tournament Wednesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. SXU advances to Saturday's tournament championship and will host the game after No. 4 seed Judson University (Ill.) upset No. 1 seed Robert Morris University (Ill.), 4-1, earlier this evening. The championship game will kick off at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, at Deaton Field.
The game remained scoreless until the 40thminute when Medina scored on a break-away set up by a perfect pass from senior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central). The Cougars carried the 1-0 lead into the halftime break and it held until the 85thminute when the pair struck again to put the Cougars ahead, 2-0. Palar fed Medina on a cross and Medina finished the shot from 20 yards out into the lower left corner of the goal. Just over three minutes later, Medina would complete the hat trick scoring on a penalty kick. Sophomore keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had a tremendous game in goal for SXU recording five saves and logging his first shutout of the season.
Saint Xavier (12-8-0 overall/8-2-0 CCAC) now hosts No. 4 seed Judson University (Ill.) at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 12. The winner of that game will receive an automatic bid for the 2011 NAIA Men's Soccer National Championships, which opens play on Saturday, November 19.
