CHICAGO - Saint Xavier University senior Tom Lynch (Frankfort, Ill./Southern Illinois University/Joliet JC/Lincoln-Way East) was one of just 36 college football place-kickers nationwide to be recognized by The Fred Mitchell Award for his excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of October. The kickers represent nearly every division of college football with nine of the honorees hailing from Football Championship Series (FCS) schools, 10 from the NCAA Division II ranks, 12 out of NCAA Division III, two from the NAIA and three from junior colleges. Lynch was also included on the Fred Mitchell Award Preseason Watch List in August and was honored by the organization for his excellence over the month of September as well.
"October was a terrific month for game-winning field goals, record-setting performances and community service by place-kickers," said Mitchell. "It is a pleasure to recognize place-kickers that were nominated by their schools for extraordinary performance during the month,"
Lynch had a huge month with the No. 1 ranked Cougars. He currently leads all place-kickers at all levels of college football in scoring this season with 97 points with 14 field goals and 55 extra-points. Lynch scored 64 of those points (10 FGs, 34 XPs) in the month of October, while also setting a pair of NAIA records in the process. He set a single game scoring record for a kicker with 21 points in a 75-33 win over Taylor University (Ind.) on October 22. He then set a NAIA mark for most career extra-points in a 63-3 victory over Concordia University (Mich.) moving up to 214 made attempts. Lynch also became SXU's all-time leading scorer last month with his 328 career points and was twice named the NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week last month. Lynch volunteers his time with Misericordia in Chicago and served as a summer camp at South Bridge Community Church in Orland Park.
