Deerfield, Ill. - The Saint Xavier University volleyball team entered Tuesday night's road match with Trinity International University (Ill.) needing a victory to secure at least a share of its first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season title since 2007 and only its second crown in the past decade. The Cougars did just that taking the match in three sets 25-17, 25-18 and 25-9 in Deerfield, Ill., behind 10 kills and eight digs from junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community). With Olivet Nazarene University also winning its CCAC finale against University of St. Francis (Ill.) Tuesday night, SXU will share the 2011 conference title with ONU with both teams boasting 11-1 league marks.
Saint Xavier came out firing and took a 12-3 lead early in the opening set led by multiple kills from both junior middle blocker Colleen O'Hara (Lemont, Ill./University of Iowa/Lemont) and freshman outside hitter Aubrey Wanta (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg). The second set started a lot tighter, but some attacking errors by the Trojans helped lead to eight straight points for the Cougars and they pulled away late for the 25-18 decision. SXU racked up 13 total kills and scored the first seven points of the third set to secure the key conference match. Wanta finished with eight kills, while junior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) posted 24 assists and nine digs.
Saint Xavier (29-4 overall/11-1 CCAC) begins play in the 2011 CCAC Volleyball Tournament next week and will take the No. 2 seed into the eight-team event. The Cougars will host its first tourney match on Tuesday, November 8, at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
