Lebanon, Ill. – Behind solid performances from junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and senior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team continued its impressive run through the 2011 season with four victories in four matches at the McKendree University Volleyball Tournament this weekend in Lebanon, Ill. Mullaney totaled 51 kills and 30 digs over the four-match stretch, while Scudder posted 42 kills and four service aces on the weekend. With the wins, SXU improves to 28-4 overall this season.
In Friday's first match against Iowa Wesleyan, the Cougars won in three sets by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-12. Mullaney led the way with 13 kills and four aces, while senior setter Ashley August (LaGrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township) provided most of the offensive set-up with 15 assists. In the late match Friday, SXU cruised again with a three-set win over Mount Mercy College (Iowa) by scores of 25-17, 25-23 and 25-9. Mullaney finished with 15 kills and a pair of aces, while junior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) posted 26 assists. Junior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) shined defensively for Saint Xavier with 22 digs.
Scudder recorded 14 kills in Saturday's opening win over Central Methodist University (Mo.). The Cougars won the match in three sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-23. Junior middle blocker Colleen O'Hara (Lemont, Ill./University of Iowa/Lemont) was tough as well finishing with seven total blocks (one solo, six assisted), while Bowe contributed 14 digs toward the winning effort. In the tourney finale against host McKendree, Mullaney doubled up with team-bests of 15 kills and 16 digs. Scudder tallied three aces in the match and Bowe posted 15 digs. SXU took the final match by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-23 and recorded a team attack percentage of .306 behind 49 total kills.
Saint Xavier (28-4 overall/10-1 CCAC) wraps up its regular season slate on Tuesday, November 1, with a road match against Trinity International University (Ill.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Deerfield, Ill. A victory Tuesday would give SXU at least a share of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) regular season title for the first time since 2007.
