Palos Heights, Ill. –Despite trailing by a goal less than six minutes into the game, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team rallied to pick up a 3-1 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon in Palos Heights, Ill. The Cougars (10-8-0 overall/8-2-0 CCAC) tied the game less than a minute before halftime on a shot by senior midfielder Samuel Sprauer (Carol Stream, Ill./Azusa Pacific University/Ohio State University/Glenbard North) set up by an assist from freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan). Two second-half goals by SXU proved to be the difference in the contest.
The Trolls scored the game's first goal when freshman midfielder Caleb Steele found the back of the net off a corner kick by junior midfielder Otniel Gross. After Sprauer's goal tied the game 1-1 at the half, the Cougars came out firing in the second half and took their first lead, 2-1, in the 54thminute when senior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) scored off an assist by senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley). With less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, junior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) provided SXU some insurance with an unassisted goal. The Cougars finished with 15 total shots, including 10 shots on goal.
Saint Xavier (10-8-0 overall/8-2-0 CCAC) will take the No. 2 seed into the 2011 CCAC Men's Soccer Tournament, which begins on Saturday, November 5. The Cougars will take on No. 7 seed Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) in first-round action. The game will be played at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago, but a start time has yet to be announced.
