CHICAGO – Led by a goal and assist from senior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) on "Senior Night," the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team pulled away for a 4-1 victory over Trinity International University (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (9-8-0 overall/7-2-0 CCAC) used a strong first-half performance to build a 3-0 advantage at the break. Freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) also had a nice game for SXU recording a goal and assist as well.
Medina scored the opening goal exactly 19 minutes into the game when he connected on a deep shot from 25 yards out. Senior midfielder Samuel Sprauer (Carol Stream, Ill./Azusa Pacific University/Ohio State University/Glenbard North) tallied the assist on the Medina score. Just over four minutes later, Palar put Saint Xavier ahead, 2-0, on a shot into the lower left corner of the net set up by a nice cross from Medina. In the 32ndminute, senior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) scored on a short shot created on a pass by Palar.
A long free kick by senior defender Vasily Giannakopoulos found its way into the goal for the Trojans just over four minutes into the second half making the score, 3-1. Freshman midfielder Carl-Heing Jean (Pompano Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) would cap the scoring for the night with a break-away goal in the 75thminute off an assist by senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley). Sophomore keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) got the start in goal for SXU and finished with three saves. The Cougars out-shot the Trojans, 18-7, in Wednesday's game.
Saint Xavier (9-8-0 overall/7-2-0 CCAC) wraps up regular season play on Saturday, October 29, with a conference road game against Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Palos Heights, Ill.
