Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team finished ninth overall out of 30 teams at the all-important NAIA Great Lakes Challenge Cross Country Invitational hosted by Aquinas College (Mich.) this past Saturday in Grand Rapids, Mich. Once again, sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) led the Cougars with an eighth-place finish in the 327-runner field with an outstanding time of 25:17 over the 8K (8,000-meters) course. Next across the finish line for SXU was senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew), who finished in 46thplace in the time of 26:09.
Rychel was followed by senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) in 77thplace at 26:34. Freshman Kyle Counter (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) was next in 81stplace in 26:38. Completing the scoring for the Cougars was junior Ricky Olmedo (Blue Island, Ill./Calumet College/Eisenhower) at No. 100 in a time of 26:59. Finishing sixth and seventh respectively for Saint Xavier were sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in 27:02 (104thplace) and sophomore Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) at 27:08 (110th).
"I have very mixed emotions concerning the performances this weekend," said SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "I had hoped for a better overall finish, but I am very satisfied with some of our performances, most notably, Brian Corcoran and Kyle Counter. We look forward to the conference meet in two weeks and feel that this is our best opportunity to come together as a team."
Saint Xavier wraps up its regular season slate with the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) meet on Saturday, November 4, at Aspen Ridge Golf Course in Bourbonnais, Ill. The meet is hosted by Olivet Nazarene University and the men's race is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start.
