CHICAGO – Freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) recorded a goal and an assist on the night as Saint Xavier University got a key Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) win over Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 3-2, in NAIA men's soccer action Saturday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. With the victory, SXU now sits in third place in the conference standings at 6-2 with an overall record of 8-8-0. ONU falls to sixth place in the CCAC at 5-4 and is now 5-10-1 overall.
Senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) netted the game's first goal in the 18thminute when he scored on a shot from 10 yards deep set up by Medina. The Tigers tied the game, 1-1, when freshman midfielder Brandon Simoes scored off a header after a free kick into the box by freshman midfielder Patrick Hoep. The score remained tied at the half and well into the second frame until senior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) put SXU up 2-1 on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 82ndminute.
Less than two minutes later, Medina gave the Cougars some insurance with a short goal off a cross by senior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). Freshman forward Todd Bevan would make it, 3-2, on an ONU goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation off an assist by junior forward Logan Engelkes. Sophomore Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) finished with five saves for SXU.
Saint Xavier (8-8-0 overall/6-2-0 CCAC) holds its final regular season home game on Wednesday, October 26, with a CCAC match-up against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. Prior to the game, the Cougars will honor their 2011 senior class.
