Palos Heights, Ill. – Despite 19 kills and 14 digs for junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community), the No. 25 ranked Saint Xavier University volleyball team fell to Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) in non-conference action Friday night at Palos Courts in Palos Heights, Ill. The match was decided in four sets with the Fighting Bees claiming the first one, 25-17, the Cougars taking the second one, 25-23, and then SAU winning the final two, 25-21 and 25-23. The loss ends an eight-match win streak for SXU. SXU is now 23-4 overall this season, while Saint Ambrose improves to 20-11.
The Cougars struggled to get into a rhythm offensively and managed an attack percentage of .129 in the match behind 27 attacking errors. Senior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 36 assists for Saint Xavier, while junior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) posted 22 digs. The Fighting Bees were very effective with their serves on the night totaling 10 aces, including three straight to end the fourth and final set.
Saint Xavier (23-4 overall/9-1 CCAC) takes the rest of the weekend off and returns to action on Tuesday, October 25, with its final regular season home match of the year. The Cougars will square off against Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Robert Morris University (Ill.) starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. Prior to the match, the 2011 senior class as well as all parents of SXU volleyball players in attendance will be recognized.
