CHICAGO – Following a scoreless first half, No. 11 ranked Olivet Nazarene University recorded a pair of second-half goals and managed to keep Saint Xavier University off the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss for the host Cougars in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) women's soccer action Friday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Despite the setback, SXU had a nice crowd on hand for its fourth annual "Cougs Kick Cancer" event, which helped raise money for breast cancer research. The team also named Fran O'Rorke an honorary captain prior to Friday's game. O'Rorke was diagnosed with breast cancer back in December 1998. She has successfully battled the disease and been cancer-free for nearly 13 years.
Just over eight minutes into the second half, ONU scored the game's first goal when senior midfielder Janel Schmitt broke free from her defender and put the Tigers up 1-0 on a break-away set up off an assist by junior defender Devin Johnston. Senior forward Jessica Jones tallied an insurance goal with just over five minutes left in regulation on a shot 10 yards deep in front of the goal. Freshman forward Jessica Higer posted the assist on the second score. Senior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) finished with four saves for the Cougars. Both teams finished with six shots-on-goal in Friday's match-up.
Saint Xavier (8-8-0 overall/4-4-0 CCAC) holds its final regular season home game on Wednesday, October 26, with a CCAC match-up against Trinity International University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start. Prior to the game, the Cougars will honor their 2011 senior class.
