Bensenville, Ill. – Despite a game-tying goal by junior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) in the 65thminute, the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) battle with Robert Morris University (Ill.), 2-1, in overtime Tuesday night in Bensenville, Ill. The Eagles picked up the victory nearly five minutes into the extra period when sophomore midfielder Gordy Gurson scored on a header inside the box that went over the outstretched hands of SXU sophomore keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine). With the setback, Saint Xavier falls to fourth in the conference standings at 5-2, while RMU sits in a first-place tie with Judson University (Ill.) at 6-1.
With less than four minutes remaining in the first half, the Eagles broke open a scoreless game with a goal by senior defender Francisco Guzman from 20 yards out set up by an assist from senior midfielder Arturo Rosiles. Breitenbach tied the game, 1-1, on a shot from the right side of the box off assists by senior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) and senior forward forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley), respectively. Held finished Tuesday's game with nine saves for the Cougars. Robert Morris had 14 total shots in the game, including 11 on goal attempts. SXU finished with 10 total shots as a team with six on goal.
Saint Xavier (7-8-0 overall/5-2-0 CCAC) will take on Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.) in a CCAC home match-up on Saturday, October 22. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
