Bourbonnais, Ill. – With two more wins at the Olivet Nazarene University Sodexo "Stop Hunger" Classic in Bourbonnais, Ill., over the weekend, the Saint Xavier University volleyball team continued its impressive season improving to 21-3 overall and landing two players on the Classic's all-tournament squad. The Cougars claimed tight victories over Oklahoma City University in three sets (30-28, 25-17 and 28-26) and then took down Wayland Baptist University (Texas) in four (22-25, 26-24, 25-22 and 27-25). Following the Classic, junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and junior middle blocker Colleen O'Hara (Lemont, Ill./University of Iowa/Lemont) both earned spots on the all-tournament team.
In the win over Oklahoma City, junior outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) tallied a team-best 13 kills to go along with seven digs and a pair of block assists. Mullaney also had a solid match posting 12 kills and 13 digs. Senior setter Jaclyn Major (Lockport, Ill./Lockport Township) finished with 34 assists, three service aces and team-high 20 digs for the Cougars.
Against Wayland Baptist, Knudsen led the way again offensively with 23 kills. She also finished with 11 digs and three service aces. Junior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) led the Cougars defensively with 19 digs, while freshman middle blocker Marie Hackert (Evansville, Ind./Reitz Memorial) posted four block assists. Major also played well in the match recording 56 assists and 12 digs.
Saint Xavier (21-3 overall/8-1 CCAC) continues Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Tuesday, October 18, with a home match against Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
