CHICAGO – Junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) finished with match-bests of 16 kills and four service aces to help the Saint Xavier University volleyball team rally for a victory over NCAA Division II University of Wisconsin-Parkside Wednesday night at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars dropped the first set by a score of 16-25 and gave up seven straight points to open the second set. However, SXU clawed its way back into the set and picked up the 27-25 decision. The momentum carried into the final two sets as Saint Xavier won by scores of 25-13 and 25-15 to claim the match.
Junior outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) also played well for the Cougars in Wednesday's win posting nine kills and team-high 12 digs. Junior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) reached double figures in digs as well with 10, while junior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) tallied 25 assists to go along with 11 digs. After recording eight kills and nine attack errors in the opening set, SXU turned it on offensively posting 37 kills to just 10 errors over the final three sets. In fact over the final two sets, the Cougars had team attack percentages of .391 and .375, respectively.
Saint Xavier (19-3 overall/8-1 CCAC) heads to Bourbonnais, Ill., on Friday, October 14, to play a pair of matches at Olivet Nazarene's "Stop Hunger" Classic. The Cougars take on Oklahoma City University in a 2 p.m. match and then close out with Wayland Baptist University (Texas) at 6 p.m.
