South Bend, Ind. - The Saint Xavier University men's cross country team took part in the Bethel College Invitational in South Bend, Ind., last Friday and finished third place among the 11 teams competing. Aquinas College (Mich.) won the overall team title with just 21 points. The Cougars were led by sophomore Brian Corcoran (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice), who finished in fifth place overall among the 139 runners with a time of 26:08 for the 8,000-meter (8K) course. Corcoran was followed by senior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in 15thplace at 26:42.
Next for the Cougars was senior Brandon Hummer (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) in 29thplace at 27:14, freshman Kyle Counter (Manhattan, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) in 37that 27:32 and sophomore Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in 39thplace with a time of 27:41. Rounding out the scoring for Saint Xavier were senior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./St. Laurence) in 49thplace with 28:00 and sophomore Chris Sarna (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) in 53rdplace with 28:07.
"I feel that we accomplished some of the things that we needed to do in this meet," said SXU men's cross country coach Ed McAllister. "We looked to be second overall, but I will take a third place finish. We need to be a bit more consistent, but we still have a few weeks to overcome our weaknesses."
Saint Xavier is off this weekend and begins preparation for the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Aquinas College (Mich.) on Saturday, October 22. The meet begins at 11 a.m. (eastern) in Grand Rapids, Mich.
