CHICAGO – Senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) recorded a goal and an assist as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team picked up a 4-0 road win over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Holy Cross College (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. The Cougars (6-5-0 overall/4-1-0 CCAC) had two goals in each half to pick up the victory and now sit in a three-way tie with Judson University and Olivet Nazarene University atop the conference standings at 4-1-0. SXU freshman keeper AJ Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) recorded his second career shutout Saturday as well posting four saves toward the winning effort.
In the seventh minute of play, junior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso) tallied the game's first goal off assists by Klancic and junior defender Mike Kipta (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg). Klancic would then put Saint Xavier up 2-0 when he scored off passes by senior midfielders Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) and Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle). The Cougars would take the 2-0 lead into the break. In the 64thminute, senior midfielder Samuel Sprauer (Carol Stream, Ill./Azusa Pacific University/Ohio State University/Glenbard North) scored a goal on an unassisted play to extend the lead to 3-0. Palar would wrap things up in the 79thminute when he scored on a shot assisted by freshman midfielder Carl-Heing Jean (Pompano Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach).
Saint Xavier (6-5-0 overall/4-1-0 CCAC) will host Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) on Tuesday, October 11. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. IIT is receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll.
