South Bend, Ind. – Senior midfielder Lauren LaRoy (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) and sophomore forward Anita Balciunas (Brookfield, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) both had big days offensively as the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team improved to 4-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) with a 9-0 victory over Holy Cross College (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in South Bend, Ind. LaRoy tallied two goals and three assists in the big win, while Balciunas posted three goals for the Cougars. With the victory, SXU improves to 8-5 overall this season.
The Cougars took the lead just over four minutes into regulation when LaRoy opened the scoring with a goal set up by an assist by senior midfielder Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy). In the 23rdminute, freshman midfielder Cassie Pullia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) would record a goal off a corner kick by sophomore midfielder Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Stagg). Just two minutes later, LaRoy would put SXU ahead, 3-0, on an unassisted goal. Balciunas would net her first goal of the game in the 29thminute off a corner kick by Janulis. A minute later, Janulis would score a goal of her own off a pass from LaRoy to extend the lead to 5-0.
Just over nine minutes into the second half, Balciunas would score back-to-back goals within a minute of each other to make the score, 7-0. LaRoy would tally the assists on both scores. In the 62ndminute, junior forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) would find the back of the net on a nice pass by Sheehan. Freshman Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) would cap the big scoring day for the Cougars with a goal in the 87thminute set up by an assist by Pullia. Senior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) picked up her fifth shutout of the season and finished with three saves on the day.
Saint Xavier (8-5-0 overall/4-1 CCAC) hosts Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) for a conference match-up on Tuesday, October 11. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
