CHICAGO – Senior midfielders Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) and Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) were both huge offensively as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team defeated Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.), 4-1, in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play Tuesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Palar had two goals and an assist for the Cougars, while Guzman added a goal and an assist toward the winning effort. With the win, SXU moves to 5-5-0 overall this season and 3-1 in the conference standings.
Senior forward Matt Klancic (Aurora, Ill./Bowling Green State University/Waubonsie Valley) opened the game's scoring in the 33rdminute when he connected from five yards out on an open net off an assist by Guzman. Five minutes later, Palar put SXU ahead, 2-0, on a nice shot from 20 yards deep set up by a pass from freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan).
Saint Xavier would take a 2-0 lead into halftime and add to it just 14 minutes into the second frame when Guzman recorded a goal off an assist by Palar. In the 70thminute, Cardinal Stritch would put one up on the scoreboard when senior midfielder Dave Scherer found the back of the net off a corner kick by freshman defender Tom Shepherd. With less than three minutes to play in regulation, Palar notched his second score of the night on a well-placed pass by Klancic. Freshman A.J. Pfatschbacher (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) posted five saves for the Cougars and improves to 3-3-0 this season as the team's starting keeper.
Saint Xavier (5-5-0 overall/3-1-0 CCAC) heads to South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, October 8, to take on conference foe Holy Cross College (Ind.). The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. (eastern) start.
