Mishawaka, Ind. - Behind only seven hits over two games, the Saint Xavier University softball team managed only one run and dropped a pair of games to No. 23 ranked Bethel College (Ind.) in a non-conference doubleheader loss Thursday in Mishawaka, Ind. The Cougars (18-10 overall/12-2 CCAC) failed to score in game one losing, 3-0, and then dropped the nightcap, 3-1.
Senior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) and senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) each recorded a hit in Thursday's game one loss. Barker hit a triple with one out in the first inning of the ballgame, but was caught attempting to steal home with two outs. Freshman right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) got the starting nod in the first game Thursday and threw all six innings allowing five hits, three runs (two earned), and a walk with five strikeouts. Shearer falls to 7-3 on the season with the loss.
A RBI groundout by sophomore third baseman Megen Friscia (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) in the third inning of game two tied things up, 1-1, but Bethel was able to tack on a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to secure the 3-1 win. Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored SXU's lone run by leading off the third inning with a double. Junior rightie Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) threw the second game for the Cougars and gave up six hits, three runs (two earned), and a walk over six innings with three strikeouts. The loss drops Bartels' win-loss record to 5-4 on the year.
Saint Xavier (18-10 overall/12-2 CCAC) heads to Springfield, Ill., this weekend to participate in the two-day University of Illinois-Springfield (Ill.) Invitational. The Cougars will play two games on Saturday, April 21, and will wrap up the event with two more games on Sunday, April 22.
