Whiting, Ind. - Freshman forward Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) tallied three goals and an assist and was part of every score in a 4-0 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory for the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team over Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Tuesday afternoon in Whiting, Ind. The Cougars scored early and often posting all four of their goals by the 35th minute of regulation. With the win, SXU improves to 6-4 overall and a perfect 2-0 in conference play.
Just nine minutes and 43 seconds into the game Tuesday, Saint Xavier notched its first goal when Graves found senior midfielder Lauren LaRoy (Orland Park, Ill./Marist) open for the score. A little over nine minutes later, Graves put the Cougars ahead, 2-0, when she finished a shot set up by assists from junior defenders Amanda Wessel (Metamora, Ill./Illinois Central College/Metamora) and Sara Cervenka (Sycamore, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Sycamore). Graves found the back of the net again in the 25th minute with sophomore midfielder Molly Sheehan (Orland Park, Ill./Stagg) providing the assist.
Graves secured the hat trick in the 34th minute when she finished a score set up by her twin sister, freshman midfielder Marissa Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West). Senior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) finished with 10 saves for SXU and logged her fourth shutout of the season. With the big day, Graves moves into the team lead in all three scoring categories with eight goals, four assists and 20 total points.
Saint Xavier (6-4 overall/2-0 CCAC) heads to Elgin, Ill., on Saturday, October 1, to continue conference play against Judson University (Ill.). The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
