CHICAGO – Junior outside hitters Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) and Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) were impressive in Tuesday night's Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) victory over Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) at Keating Hall in Chicago. The Cougars took the match in three sets 25-17, 25-10 and 25-14. SXU had little trouble offensively recording 40 kills in the match and only six errors for an attack percentage of .400.
Mullaney led the charge finishing with 13 kills, while Knudsen was tough both offensively and defensively with 11 kills and team-best 12 digs. Junior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley) set things up with 27 assists to go along with three service aces, while senior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) posted five kills and match-best three block assists. In the first set, the Cougars got six straight points late to pull away for the 25-17 win. That momentum was carried over to the second set where SXU jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage en route to the big 25-10 decision. The Cougars trailed 8-4 in the third set, but rattled off 13 straight points to build a 17-8 lead and eventually secure the match.
