Portsmouth, Ohio – Behind a combined 70 set assists and 20 digs from junior setter Desiree Aramburu (Chicago, Ill./Radford University/Mother McAuley), the Saint Xavier University volleyball team continued its winning ways by sweeping two matches in a tri-match Saturday on the campus of Shawnee State University (Ohio) in Portsmouth, Ohio. The Cougars improve to 11-2 overall this season with the victories, both in three sets, over host Shawnee State and University of Northwestern Ohio, respectively. Junior outside hitter Kelly Knudsen (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn Community) benefitted most from Aramburu's assists recording 27 kills on the weekend. SXU has won seven of its last eight matches, all in the month of September.
SXU took the first match against Shawnee State by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 26-24 behind a match-best 12 kills by junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community). Senior middle blocker Kim Scudder (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) also had a nice opening match posting 10 kills and three block assists, while junior libero Christine Bowe (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) chipped in 12 digs. The Cougars carried the momentum into their second match of the day defeating Northwestern Ohio, 28-26, 25-23 and 25-17. Knudsen led the attack with 18 kills, while Aramburu had 38 assists and team-best 13 digs. Mullaney finished the second match with nine kills and nine digs.
Saint Xavier (11-2 overall/1-1 CCAC) returns to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) play on Tuesday, September 20, with a road match against Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start in Chicago.
