CHICAGO – Led by a goal and an assist from freshman forward Morgan Graves (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West), the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team picked up its third straight victory Saturday evening with a 2-0 decision over visiting Indiana Institute of Technology at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Senior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion) earned her third shutout of the season in goal for the Cougars posting nine saves for the game. SXU improves to 3-3-0 overall and ends the Warriors' five-game win streak (5-2-0 overall) with Saturday's win.
Graves got the Cougar offense rolling early when she found junior forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) open on a pass that resulted in a nice break-away goal from 15 yards out for Peele in the game's 19th minute. Saint Xavier carried its 1-0 lead into halftime, but it took just over six minutes of play in the second half before SXU cushioned the lead. Graves logged the Cougars' second score off a well-positioned cross by senior midfielder Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) at the 51:09 mark. Both Peele and Graves finished the game with three shots apiece. SXU had nine total shots with seven on-goal attempts, while Indiana Tech finished with 13 total shots with nine on target.
Saint Xavier (3-3-0 overall) heads to Fort Wayne, Ind., next weekend to take part in the two-day University of Saint Francis Invitational. The Cougars open up on Friday, September 16, with a 2 p.m. (eastern) match-up against the host Cougars and then wrap up play on Saturday, September 17, with a 12 p.m. (eastern) meeting with Marian University (Ind.).
