CHICAGO – Freshman midfielder Luis Medina (Waukegan, Ill./Waukegan) scored one goal and assisted two more as the Saint Xavier University men's soccer team posted three unanswered goals to rally from an early 1-0 deficit and pick up the 3-1 victory over Goshen College (Ind.) Wednesday night at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Medina scored the game-tying goal in the 32nd minute of play and then posted the assists on the final two scores to secure the win in the Cougars' home opener. It was the second straight victory for SXU with the team improving to 2-1-0 on the young season.
At the 18-minute mark, the Maple Leafs scored the game's first goal when senior defender Connor Histand found the lower left corner of the net from five yards deep on an assist by senior forward Jan Dohnal. Just under 15 minutes later, Medina took advantage of a beautiful cross by senior midfielder Al Palar (Zabrze, Poland/Plainfield Central) to tie the game, 1-1. The Cougars would strike again quickly when senior midfielder Adrian Guzman (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle) received a pass from Medina and sent his shot to the upper left corner of the goal in the 34th minute to give SXU a 2-1 advantage. Saint Xavier added some insurance in the 76th minute when junior midfielder Kyle Breitenbach (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso University/Valparaiso HS) scored from 20 yards out off another nice assist by Medina. SXU sophomore keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) played all 90 minutes in goal and finished with three saves. The Cougars had 18 shots in the match, including 11 on goal attempts.
Saint Xavier (2-1-0 overall) faces a tough task on Saturday, September 10, when No. 4 ranked Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.) comes to town. The big NAIA match-up is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
