CHICAGO - Led by another huge pitching performance by freshman right-hander Jalyn Shearer (Beecher, Ill./Beecher), Saint Xavier University swept a doubleheader from Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Judson College (Ill.) in softball action Wednesday at the SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (18-8 overall/12-2 CCAC) won the first game, 9-1, in six innings and took the nightcap, 14-0, in five innings. Shearer threw all six innings of game one allowing just two hits, one run (unearned), and a walk with six strikeouts for her sixth win of the season (6-2).
Freshman designated player Nicole Fletcher (Lowell, Ind./Lowell) had the big stick in Wednesday's first game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI. Her two-run homer over the left field wall ended the game with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior centerfielder Marie Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a good game at the plate in game one going 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, two stolen bases, and a RBI. The Cougars finished the first game with nine total hits compared to just two by the Lady Eagles.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, the SXU offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two-RBI single to right field by sophomore left fielder Holly Kennedy (Bloomington, Ill./University). A two-RBI single by Fletcher in the fourth helped build a 7-0 advantage for the Cougars before Fletcher ended the game early with her two-run shot in the sixth. Judson scored its lone run of the game on a RBI groundout in the top of the sixth.
The Saint Xavier offense continued to produce plenty of hits and runs in the second game en route to a 14-0 victory. Senior shortstop Samantha Lovato (Oak Forest, Ill./Eisenhower) helped lead the charge going 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored, and three RBI. Senior right fielder Nicole Barker (Chicago Heights, Ill./Marian Catholic) also had a solid game two at the plate going 3-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, and three RBI. Junior rightie Nicolle Bartels (Chicago, Ill./Marian Catholic) got the win (5-3) throwing the first four innings and allowing one hit, no runs, and three walks with two strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (18-8 overall/12-2 CCAC) takes a break from its CCAC schedule to take on non-conference foe and No. 23 ranked Bethel College (Ind.) in a road doubleheader. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. in Mishawaka, Ind.
