Joliet, Ill. –Saint Xavier University junior outside hitter Kayla Mullaney (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) was named the season's first Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Volleyball Player of the Week Wednesday when the honors were released by the conference office. Mullaney helped the Cougars open the 2011 campaign with a 4-1 overall record, its best start to a season since 2002. She racked up a team-leading 66 kills over four of SXU's first five matches last week, including 22 of them in a key win Saturday over Evangel University (Mo.), a team receiving votes in the NAIA Volleyball Preseason Top 25 Poll.
In addition to her kill total, Mullaney has also posted eight service aces, 38 digs and seven total blocks (five assisted) this fall. She posted two double-doubles with 22 kills and 11 digs against Evangel and 16 kills and 14 digs in a loss to Grand View University (Iowa), another team receiving votes nationally. With a .309 attack percentage, Mullaney averaged 4.13 kills and 2.38 digs per set. In her big matches against team receiving national attention, she averaged 19 kills and 11.5 digs per match. Mullaney almost averaged a double-double on the week with 16.5 kills and 9.5 digs per match.
Saint Xavier (4-1 overall) hosts its SXU Volleyball Tournament this weekend at the Shannon Center in Chicago. The Cougars open play at the tourney at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 2, with a match against Spring Arbor University (Mich.).
