Adrian, Mich. – Junior defender Sara Cervenka (Sycamore, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Sycamore) finished with two shots on goal, but the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team dropped its third straight game falling, 2-1, to Siena Heights University (Mich.) in double overtime Monday evening in Adrian, Mich. The Cougar offense had difficulty generating shot attempts with the team's lone score coming off an own goal by the host Saints less than a minute before halftime. Sophomore Anita Balciunas (Brookfield, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) would get the start in goal in place of injured senior starter Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois University/Lake Orion). Balciunas had a solid night finishing with 13 saves.
Following the own goal by Siena Heights, SXU took a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at the half. However, the lead would be short-lived as the Saints erased the lead just over seven minutes into the second half when junior forward Alessia Vagnini scored on a loose ball in the box. Both teams played well defensively to finish regulation and a 10-minute overtime period with the score still knotted at 1-1. Unfortunately for the Cougars, Vagnini netted the game-winning goal in the 105th minute off a deflected shot attempt. SXU finished the game with nine shot attempts compared to 32 for the Saints.
Saint Xavier (0-3-0 overall) returns to Chicago tonight and will start preparing for its home opener on Saturday, September 3, against No. 4 ranked Hastings College (Neb.). The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. start at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago.
