Grand Rapids, Mich. –A first-half goal by senior defender Larissa Jondle (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) gave the Saint Xavier University women's soccer team an early 1-0 advantage, but a pair of second-half scores by Aquinas College (Mich.) proved to be the difference in a 2-1 season-opening loss for the visiting Cougars in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Saints were tough offensively posting 17 shots on the afternoon compared to just nine by SXU. Senior keeper Ashley Shugar (Lake Orion, Mich./Western Illinois/Lake Orion) was solid in goal for the Cougars posting eight saves.
Jondle gave Saint Xavier a 1-0 advantage in the 23rdminute of play scoring off a nice assist by senior midfielder Joanna Janulis (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy). Just over 17 minutes into the second half, Aquinas tied the game on a goal by freshman forward Melissa Hogan off a feed from senior forward Jaime Tomaszewski. Tomaszewski would then net the game-winning goal just nine minutes later on a play set up by an assist from sophomore midfielder Madeline Rammal. Junior forward Elysha Peele (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) led the offensive attack for SXU finishing with three of the team's nine shots, including a shot on goal.
