Mishawaka, Ind. – A second-half, free kick goal by senior midfielder Samuel Sprauer (Carol Stream, Ill./Ohio State/Azusa Pacific University/Glenbard North) was not enough to help lead the No. 25 Saint Xavier University men's soccer team to a season-opening win Wednesday night. The Cougars (0-1 overall) fell, 2-1, in double overtime to Bethel College (Ind.) in Mishawaka, Ind., despite out-shooting the host Pilots, 26-14. With less than three minutes to play in the second extra period, Bethel junior forward Bernardo Sant'Anna scored the game-winning goal off a deflected missed shot attempt near the post.
The Pilots struck early scoring on a header by junior defender Joao Couto off a corner kick by junior midfielder Gerardo Carrera just over eight minutes into the first half. Bethel would hold the 1-0 advantage into the second half before Sprauer tied things up in the 60thminute. Shortly after the game-tying goal, the contest was delayed nearly an hour due to lightning. When play resumed, shots came at a premium for both teams over the final 30 minutes of regulation. Sophomore keeper Kyle Held (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) took the loss for SXU in goal and finished the night with five saves.
Saint Xavier (0-1 overall) heads to Grand Rapids, Mich., on Wednesday, August 31, to take on Aquinas College (Mich.). The road game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. (eastern) start.
