CHICAGO - Luis "Flaco" Medina, a senior center midfielder at Waukegan High School in Waukegan, Ill., has signed a letter of intent to continue both his athletic and academic career at Saint Xavier University as a member of the Cougar men's soccer program. Medina, a Waukegan native, played prep soccer under Joe Martinez at Waukegan High School. He will likely play at either midfielder or forward when he joins the SXU roster this fall.
Medina is the son of Luis and Olga Medina of Waukegan. He plans to study biology with the intent of becoming a medical assistant. Saint Xavier University men's soccer coach Ed Vucinic has had Medina on his recruiting radar over the last couple of years and was thrilled with the signing.
"Flaco has been a top target of ours for the last couple of years, so I'm extremely happy and excited that he will be joining us," said Vucinic. "This is a classic case of big things coming in small packages. At 5-5, he certainly won't be physically scaring anybody, but opponents better take note of his skills and ability to impact a game. He is quick, technical and extremely savvy. He has a very good understanding of finding seams and spaces in defenses, timing his runs and creating dangerous situations. Flaco has got a little ‘flavor' to his game that makes him fun to watch. There is no question he will give us more options in the attack end and should fit in well with the guys we have returning."
