Findlay, Ohio - Saint Xavier University junior linebacker Sean Kenney (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and junior kicker Shane Longest (Wilmington, Ill./Wilmington) were named the Mid-States Football Association (MSFA) Midwest League Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, when the honors were released by the conference office Tuesday. Both players played instrumental roles in the No. 8 ranked Cougars' 13-10 upset road win over No. 5 McKendree College (Ill.) last Saturday in Lebanon, Ill.
Kenney helped lead a defense that shut down the Bearcats offense in the second, third, and fourth quarters allowing his team the chance to erase a 10-point first-quarter deficit and capture the 13-10 victory. Kenney finished the game with a team-high tying 11 total tackles, including seven solos.
Longest converted both his field goal attempts (37 yards and 47 yards) and an extra point to help lead SXU to its second win of the 2006 season. He made what proved to be the game-winning 47-yard field goal with 5:48 left in regulation. Longest also had two of his four kickoffs downed for touchbacks in the game.
No. 5 ranked Saint Xavier (2-0 overall, 1-0 MSFA) returns home to face Malone College (Ohio) on Saturday, September 16, in a MSFA crossover game at Bruce R. Deaton Memorial Field in Chicago. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
