CHICAGO - Senior center fielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest,
Ill./Northern Illinois University/Oak Forest) had a huge day to help lead Saint
Xavier University to a doubleheader split with Judson University (Ill.) in
Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) baseball action Sunday
afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The Cougars (27-25-1 overall/19-11
CCAC) dropped the first game, 8-7; but held on to capture the 6-3 victory in
the nightcap. With the game two
win, SXU locks up the sixth and final playoff berth in the 2011 CCAC Baseball
Tournament, which begins on Tuesday, May 3, at Oil City Stadium in Whiting, Ind.
nearly unstoppable in Sunday's first game going 3-for-4 with two homers, a
double and five RBI. The Cougars
started the game on fire racking up five extra-base hits, including a pair of
homers, for five runs in the first two innings to take an early 5-1 lead. Judson got another run back in the
bottom of the third on a fielder's choice with runners at first and third to
make the score, 5-2. However, the
real damage came in the bottom of the fifth when the Eagles took the lead for
good plating six runs off four hits, two walks and an error. A two-run homer by Maziur in the top of
the seventh would make it, 8-7, but that was as close as it would get. Freshman shortstop Justin Smykowski
(Crestwood, Ill./Shepard) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while sophomore
left fielder Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso, Ind./Mount Carmel) had two hits with a
home run, a double, two runs scored and two RBI for the Cougars.
In game two,
Saint Xavier built another early lead going ahead 5-0 after three innings of
play highlighted by a two-run homer by freshman first baseman Brad Myjak
(Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) with two outs in the top of the third. In the top of the fifth, SXU extended
the advantage to 6-0 following a RBI single by junior designated hitter Brett
Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic).
The bottom of the fifth again proved to be a tough frame for the Cougars
as Judson took advantage of an infield error and a RBI double to plate three
runs and cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
However, freshman Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) threw two solid
innings of relief to earn the save, his second of the year. Klein gave up three hits, no runs and a
walk with a pair of strikeouts. Sophomore
right-hander Lucas Fritsch (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) got the win (5-3) throwing
the first four innings and allowing four hits, one run (unearned) and a walk
with two strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (27-25-1
overall/19-11 CCAC) has finished up its regular season slate and secured the
sixth and final seed in this week's CCAC Baseball Tournament. The Cougars will take on No. 1 seed
Robert Morris University (Ill.) on Tuesday, May 3, at 10 a.m. at Oil City
Stadium in Whiting, Ind.
