Mishawaka, Ind. -
Sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan
(Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) combined for three hits and a RBI on the day as the No. 17 ranked Saint Xavier University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Bethel College (Ind.) Saturday afternoon in Mishawaka, Ind. The Cougars, who had not played since the previous Saturday due to wet weather, looked rusty offensively in the first game and fell 5-0, but bounced back in the nightcap for a 5-0 victory behind an impressive pitching performance by freshman Megan Nonnemacher
(Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community). Nonnemacher threw the entire second game and gave up just five hits and no walks with six strikeouts for the shutout win to move her record to 15-4 on the year.
In the opening game Saturday, the Cougars managed just three hits as a team and fell behind early in the game. Junior Amie Brown
(Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the loss for Saint Xavier on the mound throwing all six innings and allowing 10 hits, five runs (all earned) and a walk with no strikeouts. She falls to 13-7 this season with the loss. In addition to Mollohan, senior second baseman Brittany Hannigan
(Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and sophomore designated hitter Jamie Reed
(Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) each had a hit for SXU in game one. The Pilots scored a run in both the first and third innings and then added two more in the fifth and another in the sixth to complete the game's scoring.
The Cougars bats warmed up in the second outing as the team pounded out nine hits led by two apiece for Mollohan, senior center fielder Megan Paradzinski
(Munster, Ind./Munster) and senior catcher Amy Kennedy
(Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac). The game was scoreless through three innings before SXU went ahead 2-0 in the top of the fourth. A run in the fifth made the score, 3-0, before the Cougars added some insurance with two more runs in the seventh. Kennedy, Mollohan, senior first baseman Courtney Murphy
(Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and freshman left fielder Ariel Hinton
(Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) each recorded a RBI in the second game, while junior shortstop Ashley Hunter
(Metamora, Ill./Metamora) posted two runs scored.
