CHICAGO - Freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) threw a one-hit shutout in Thursday's second game to help give No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University an 8-0 victory in five innings over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in NAIA softball action at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars (28-12 overall/14-4 CCAC) entered the day needing to win at least one of the two games on the day to secure at least a share of the 2011 CCAC regular season crown. SXU dropped the opening game 4-3, but made up for the loss with 11 hits for eight unanswered runs in the nightcap. Nonnemacher recorded win No. 13 (13-4) this season throwing all five innings and giving up just the lone hit and no walks with six strikeouts.

The first game got off to a slow start with neither team crossing home plate over the first three innings of play. After not posting a hit over the opening three frames, the Calumet College bats came alive in the top of the fourth with five hits, including a two-run homer, that helped build a 4-0 lead for the Crimson Wave. Saint Xavier chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the sixth with three runs highlighted by RBI singles by senior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and sophomore designated player Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X). SXU went down in order in the seventh to stifle any further rally attempt. Junior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) took the loss (12-6) allowing six hits, four runs (two earned) and a walk with 11 strikeouts over the seven-inning affair. Junior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) went 3-for-3 in the game with a run scored.

Sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and senior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) each had RBI singles in the bottom of the second of game two to give the Cougars an early 2-0 advantage. In the fourth inning, Gryczewski kicked off some more scoring with another RBI single, and two batters later, senior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) brought two more runs home with a two-RBI double to left-center field to help push the lead to 6-0. Senior center fielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) ended the game early in the fifth with a RBI single to left field to bring home SXU's eighth run. Gryczewski finished the nightcap 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI.

Saint Xavier (28-12 overall/14-4 CCAC) heads to Des Moines, Iowa, this weekend to play four games against Grand View University (Iowa) and William Penn University (Iowa). The Cougars play a doubleheader against Grand View on Friday, April 22, starting at 2 p.m. and then wrap up the trip with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday against William Penn at Grand View's home field.
