Michigan City, Ind. - Senior center fielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) felt right at home back in her home state of Indiana in leading No. 19 ranked Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of Purdue University-North Central (Ind.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) softball action Wednesday at Patriot Park in Michigan City, Ind. The Cougars (27-11 overall/13-3 CCAC) won the first game, 3-2, with the go-ahead run coming in the top of the seventh inning and then took the second game, 5-2. Paradzinski posted three hits in each game for six total hits and three runs scored on the afternoon.
The Cougars trailed early on in Wednesday's first game following a two-run homer by PNC sophomore shortstop Jessica Morgan in the bottom of the third inning that put the Panthers up, 2-0. Freshman right fielder Ariel Hinton (Crawsfordsville, Ind./Crawsfordsville) got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth with a RBI single and senior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) tied the game in the fifth with another RBI single to right field. Paradzinski scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh off a RBI single by senior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) up the middle. Junior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) improved to 12-5 on the year pitching all seven innings for SXU and allowing six hits, two runs (both earned) and no walks with four strikeouts.
Behind 14 total hits, the Cougars took control of a late game that was tied 2-2 after one inning of play to capture the 5-2 victory. In addition to Paradzinski, sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) and sophomore designated player Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X) each finished with three hits in the nightcap. A two-RBI double by Murphy in the top of the first inning gave Saint Xavier a quick 2-0 lead, but Purdue-North Central tied it up in the bottom of the frame on an infield error and a sacrifice fly. Hinton recorded a RBI single in the top of the fourth to put SXU ahead, 3-2, and then added some insurance in the fifth with Reed's two-RBI double to center field. Freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) earned victory No. 12 (12-4) throwing the complete game and giving up just six hits, two runs (one earned) and a walk with seven strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (27-11 overall/13-3 CCAC) wraps up the conference portion of its 2011 regular season slate on Thursday, April 21, with a home doubleheader against Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.). The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. A sweep of tomorrow's games would give the Cougars its first regular season CCAC title since 2009.
