CHICAGO - Sophomore right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) was
impressive on the mound in helping lead Saint Xavier University to an 8-1 win
over Trinity Christian College (Ill.) in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic
Conference (CCAC) baseball action Monday afternoon at Richard R. Ferrell
Memorial Field in Chicago. The game was
originally supposed to be played last Friday on Trinity Christian's campus in
Palos Heights, but poor field conditions moved the game to Chicago. The Cougars racked up 15 total hits in the
ballgame led by senior right fielder Joe Dispensa (Chicago, Ill./St. Joseph's
College/Mesa CC/St. Rita), who went 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Stirling picked up his fifth victory of the
year (5-1) throwing all nine innings and allowing just six hits, one run (unearned)
and no walks with seven strikeouts.
Freshman left fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) also had a nice
showing at the plate Monday for Saint Xavier going 2-for-5 with a triple, a run
scored and two RBI. Dispensa would
ground out to third base to bring home SXU's first run in the top of the first
inning. An infield error and a wild
pitch in the bottom of the frame would help tie things up, 1-1. However, the rest of the game belonged to the
Cougars as seven unanswered runs over the next eight innings proved to be the
difference. In the top of the third, RBI
singles by senior center fielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern
Illinois University/Oak Forest) and junior catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park,
Ill./Sandburg) would make the score, 3-1.
Klein would extend the lead to three runs, 4-1, in the sixth on a RBI
single to left field. A RBI double by
Dispensa in the seventh made it, 5-1, and forced a pitching change by the
Trolls. Junior second baseman Tom Simek
(New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) would record a RBI single to right field in the
eighth and Klein would post a RBI triple down the right field line in the ninth
to highlight the rest of the scoring.
Saint Xavier (22-18-1 overall/14-4 CCAC) hosts CCAC foe Trinity
International University (Ill.) at Ferrell Field on Tuesday, April 19, for a
doubleheader. The first game is
scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
