Bensenville, Ill. - Freshman first baseman Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) homered to right centerfield to help lead Saint Xavier University to a 2-1 victory in game one of Wednesday's baseball doubleheader with Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) leader Robert Morris University (Ill.) at Geils Field in Bensenville, Ill. Unfortunately for the Cougars, RMU senior right-hander Ryan Miller racked up 11 strikeouts and allowed just three hits in a 5-0 game-two victory for the Eagles. Senior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) led the SXU offense on the day posting a combined two hits and the game-winning RBI in the opener.
Wednesday's first game proved to be a pitcher's duel with SXU getting the last laugh thanks to Erickson's RBI single up the middle in the top of the seventh. Freshman Scott Vachon (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) earned the victory to improve to 5-2 this season. Vachon threw all seven innings and allowed just four hits, one earned run and a walk with one strikeout. A sacrifice fly by the Eagles in the bottom of the first inning gave the home team an early 1-0 lead. Myjak tied the game in the third with his solo shot to right centerfield. An infield error by RMU in the top of the seventh kept the inning alive and helped set the stage for Erickson's go-ahead RBI single. The Eagles would put the game-tying run on third base with two outs in the bottom of the frame, but Vachon would get a fly-out to left field to secure the win.
Miller told the tale of Wednesday's nightcap keeping the Cougar bats in check throughout his shutout performance. Senior right-hander Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) took the loss on the mound for Saint Xavier going 5.1 innings and giving up nine hits, five runs (all earned) and three walks with one strikeout. He falls to 4-3 on the year with the loss. A RBI single in the bottom of the second gave Robert Morris a 1-0 advantage before three RBI singles in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-0. A sacrifice fly by the Eagles in the sixth gave them some added insurance.
Saint Xavier (20-18-1 overall/12-4 CCAC) heads to Palos Heights, Ill., on Friday, April 15, for the first of a three-game, weekend, conference series with Trinity Christian College (Ill.). The Friday game is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. before the series concludes with a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. at SXU‘s Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field.
