CHICAGO - Junior catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) continued to swing a red-hot bat Monday as the Saint Xavier University baseball team rolled to an 11-2 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The game was being made up from a previously scheduled doubleheader on March 26. The first make-up game was played on March 28 with the Cougars defeating the Lakers by a score of 8-1. Pipolo finished Monday's game 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and two RBI.
Pipolo got SXU off to a hot start offensively with a two-RBI double in the first inning. The Cougars would go ahead, 4-1, after three innings of play when sophomore first baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) brought home a run on a RBI triple and later scored in the frame on a wild pitch. A solo homer by the Lakers in the fourth inning made the score, 4-2, before SXU scored seven unanswered runs over the next two innings to secure the victory. A two-RBI single by junior second baseman Tom Simek (New Lenox, Ill./St. Laurence) in the fifth would kick off the scoring surge. In the sixth, senior third baseman Matt Erickson (Oak Lawn, Ill./Richards) and Simek would both hit two-RBI singles to highlight a five-run frame. Sophomore right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel) got the win on the mound for the Cougars improving to 4-1 on the year. He threw all seven innings and allowed nine hits, two runs (both earned) and a walk with a strikeout.
Saint Xavier (20-17-1 overall/12-3 CCAC) will take on conference foe Robert Morris University in a road doubleheader on Wednesday, April 13. The first game will start at 3 p.m. at John C. Giels Field in Bensenville, Ill.
