CHICAGO - Behind another phenomenal
day at the plate by sophomore designated hitter Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Saint
Pius X), the Saint Xavier University softball team rolled to a pair of Chicagoland
Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) wins over Cardinal Stritch University
(Wis.) Saturday afternoon at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The Cougars won the first game, 7-2, and then
cruised to a 12-2 victory in just five innings in game two. Reed went a combined 4-for-8 with a home run,
two runs scored and five RBI. In fact of
her team-leading six homers, all have come since the start of April, a 10-game
stretch for SXU. With the two wins,
Saint Xavier improves to 21-9 overall on the year and 8-2 in conference
play. The Wolves fall to 5-15 overall this
season and 0-6 in the CCAC.
Junior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got her 10th
victory of the season (10-3) on the mound in Saturday's opening game. Brown threw all seven frames and gave up just
seven hits, two runs (both earned) and no walks with two strikeouts. Sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley
Park, Ill./Andrew) led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBI, while
Reed went 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and three RBI. Batting in the top of the inning due to the
site change of the games, SXU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first
inning when Mollohan posted a RBI single to right field. CSU would tie the game in the bottom of the
third on a RBI single of its own. A RBI
single by senior center fielder Megan Paradzinski (Munster, Ind./Munster) in
the fourth inning and another by Mollohan in the fifth put the Cougars up, 3-1,
after five innings of play. The Wolves
would cut the lead to a run, 3-2, with a RBI single in the sixth, but Reed's
three-run homer in the top of the seventh helped plate four more runs and put
the game away.
In game two, SXU scored quickly again taking advantage of an infield
throwing error to go up, 1-0, in the top of the first. However, Cardinal Stritch answered right back
with two runs off back-to-back RBI singles to take a 2-1 lead after one inning
of play. The rest of the game belonged
to the Cougars as the offense heated up for 14 hits and 11 unanswered runs over
the next four frames to end things early.
Junior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) helped lead the
charge going 2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. Seven different batters in SXU's line-up
recorded two hits in the nightcap.
Freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) improved
to 9-4 this season with the victory. She
went all five innings and allowed seven hits, two runs (both earned) and two
walks with three strikeouts.
Saint Xavier (21-9 overall/8-2 CCAC) will head to Joliet,
Ill., on Tuesday, April 12, to complete a make-up doubleheader against
conference rival University of St. Francis (Ill.). The first game Tuesday will start at 3
p.m. The original date of the
doubleheader was March 24.
