CHICAGO - The Saint Xavier University men's track team opened its 2011 outdoor season with a bit of "double duty" with meets on both Wednesday, March 30, and Saturday, April 2. Opening the season at the Troll Invitational hosted by Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights, Ill., SXU's highlights included a winning shot put throw by junior Michael Johnson (Harvey, Ill./Thornton) of 48'1" as well as junior Brandon Hummer's (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) sixth-place finish in the 1500-meter run in 4:11.76 and a third-place finish of the 4x400 relay team consisting of Hummer, sophomore Matt Herrmann (Oak Lawn, Ill./University of Iowa/Brother Rice), junior Daniel Hasty (Oak Lawn, Ill./Brother Rice) and freshman Shane Kenney (Porter, Ind./Chesterton) in a time of 3:36.72.

On Saturday, the Cougars moved on to the University of Chicago for the Ted Hayden Invitational. Highlights of this meet included: freshman Nick Pesek's (Mount Greenwood, Ill./Marist) fourth-place finish in the 100-meter dash in 11.42, Hummer's fifth-place finish in the 400-meter dash in 52.29 seconds, freshman Chris Shellenberger (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point) in the 3000-meter steeplechase in sixth place with 10:30 and junior Matt Rychel (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) in sixth place in the 5000-meter run in 15:48.04.

"Early April meets are designed to see just where we are at the beginning of the season," commented Saint Xavier University men's track coach Ed McAllister. "Many times, we run people in events that they normally will not specialize in through the season. Shellenberger looked solid in his first steeplechase, while Rychel ran well in a longer distance than his usual. Hummer ran nicely in the 1500 meters and Michael Johnson definitely looked strong in the shot put. I look forward to the end of the month when we start to get our better performances and more specialization. This was a strong team effort."

SXU heads to the Chicagoland Championships on Saturday, April 9, at the University of Chicago in Chicago. The meet starts at 12:45 p.m.
