Adrian, Mich. - Despite having three of its players recognized on the Mid-America
Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) Eastern Division all-conference
squad, the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team was eliminated in
first round action of the MAMVIC East Tournament Friday in Adrian, Mich., and
ended its 2011 season with a 7-19 record.
The No. 5 seeded Cougars (7-19 overall) fell to No. 4 seed Clarke
University (Iowa) in the late afternoon match in three straight sets by scores
of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-18. After the
tournament, SXU had sophomore outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers
Grove South) earn a spot on the first team of the All-MAMVIC East team, while
freshman right side hitter Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and freshman
setter Kevin Maxwell (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) claimed honorable mention
Friday's loss to Clarke, freshman outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park,
Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) finished with eight kills and a block assist to
pace the Cougars. Muys was tough
defensively totaling 11 digs in the match, while Maxwell posted 20 set
assists. Porter finished with three
kills and seven digs for SXU.
Xavier finished just its second season with a 7-19 overall record and claimed
fifth place in the eight-team Eastern Division of the MAMVIC with a 6-8
mark. The Cougars added three more
victories to their record from last year's debut season.
