Bourbonnais, Ill. - Behind a big weekend at the plate by sophomore designated player Jamie Reed (Lincoln, Neb./Saint Pius X), the Saint Xavier University softball team split its four games at the Olivet Nazarene University Invitational in Bourbonnais, Ill., this past weekend. The Cougars (16-8 overall) fell to No. 18 Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), 14-10, in Friday's first game before defeating Robert Morris University (Ill.), 3-2, in the late game. On Saturday, SXU beat McKendree University (Ill.), 4-2, before falling to Bethel College (Ind.), 8-4, in eight innings. Reed went a combined 5-for-11 with a double, a triple and two homers to go along with her three runs scored and six RBI.

In the first game against host Olivet Nazarene, the Cougars got plenty of offensive production, including a two-run homer by Reed, and a nice game by senior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac). Kennedy went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and two RBI. However, the Tiger bats were just as hot as both teams combined for 24 runs off 21 hits in the ballgame. Freshman third baseman Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) also had a big game for Saint Xavier going 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI. SXU led 10-8 heading into the bottom of the sixth before Olivet Nazarene posted six runs off four hits, three for extra bases, in the frame to take back the lead for good. In the second game Friday, the Cougars trailed 1-0 after three innings of play before a solo shot by Kennedy and a RBI double by Reed in the bottom of the fourth put them ahead, 2-1. A RBI single in the sixth by the Eagles tied the game, 2-2, before SXU ended things in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out, RBI single to right field by Kennedy. Junior Amie Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the win (6-2) throwing all seven innings and allowing seven hits, two runs (both earned) and two walks with six strikeouts.

Reed came through with a huge three-run home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth to help Saint Xavier rally for a 4-2 victory against McKendree in Saturday's first game. Brown pitched another beauty going to 7-2 on the year with another complete game performance. She gave up just three hits, two runs (both earned) and four walks with four strikeouts. Sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) also had a solid game for the Cougars going 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Unfortunately, SXU could not end the tournament with a win as Bethel got a walk-off grand slam to get the 8-4 decision in eight innings. Things looked promising early as the Cougars built a 4-0 lead over the first six frames thanks in part to a two-RBI single by senior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg). However, the Pilots scored four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to rally for the victory. Freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community) got the loss (7-4) allowing nine hits, eight runs (three earned) and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Saint Xavier (16-8 overall/3-1 CCAC) continues its conference slate on Tuesday, April 5, with a doubleheader against Trinity International University (Ill.) in Deerfield, Ill. The first game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
