CHICAGO - Freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington,
Ill./Normal Community) was on fire again on the mound throwing a six-hit
shutout to help lead Saint Xavier University to a doubleheader sweep of
Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Trinity Christian College
(Ill.) by scores of 1-0 and 9-3 Thursday at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. Nonnemacher improved to 7-2 on the season
with the game one victory allowing no walks and striking out seven batters. The Cougars got their lone run of the opener when
back-to-back errors by the Trolls plated senior left fielder Lisa Gryczewski
(Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) after she reached second base on a one-out
double to left field.
The Saint Xavier
bats warmed up plenty in the day's second game as junior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) pounded out two of the Cougars' four home runs
in the nightcap. Senior catcher Amy Kennedy (Pontiac, Ill./Pontiac) and senior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak
Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) also each hit a homer in the second game for SXU. Hunter finished 2-for-4 at the plate with six
RBI to lead the charge. Junior Amie
Brown (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) got the win (5-2) on the mound for the
Cougars throwing all seven innings and giving up just eight hits, three runs
(two earned) and two walks with five strikeouts. SXU never trailed in the second game after
taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Xavier (14-6 overall/3-1 CCAC) heads south to Bourbonnais, Ill., this weekend
to take part in the two-day Olivet Nazarene University Invitational. The Cougars open with their first of four
games in the event at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 1, against the host Tigers.
