Bensenville, Ill. - Sophomore third baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) combined for three hits, two runs scored and three RBI on the day as the Saint Xavier University softball team opened its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) slate with a doubleheader split with Robert Morris University (Ill.) Tuesday evening at the Redmond Athletic Complex in Bensenville, Ill. The first game turned into a 13-inning marathon and the host Eagles prevailed squeaking out a 1-0 victory to spoil an impressive pitching performance by SXU freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community). The Cougars made up for the lack of offensive production in the nightcap posting a 10-7 victory paced by two hits by Mollohan.

Nonnemacher did her part in Tuesday's opener throwing 12.1 innings and allowing just seven hits, one earned run and two walks with 12 strikeouts over the extended start. With the loss, she falls to 6-2 on the season. Senior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) was the one bright spot at the plate for the Cougars going 3-for-5 in the game. SXU totaled six hits, all singles, as a team over the 13-inning stretch. The second game opened with RMU taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame. However, Saint Xavier plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning set up by an error and three straight walks. The Cougars would extend their lead to 7-1 in the sixth after two more fielding errors by the Eagles. Mollohan would help give SXU a 10-2 advantage in the top of the seventh off a two-RBI single. A couple of errors for the Cougars helped Robert Morris rack up five runs in the final frame, but it was not enough to overcome the eight-run deficit.

Saint Xavier (12-6 overall/1-1 CCAC) hosts Trinity Christian College (Ill.) at SXU Softball Field in Chicago on Thursday, March 31. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
