CHICAGO - Behind solid play by seniors Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Oak Forest) and Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South), the Saint Xavier University baseball team rolled to an 8-1 victory over Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Roosevelt University (Ill.) Monday at Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago. The seven-inning game was part of a postponed doubleheader from the weekend and the Cougars hope to get the second make-up game played later this week. Maziur, SXU's starting centerfielder, went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI. Branigan got the win (3-1) on the mound throwing all seven innings and allowing three hits, one unearned run and no walks.
Branigan started the game in cruise control retiring the first 12 batters he faced. In the top of the fifth, an infield error followed by back-to-back singles led to the Lakers' lone run of the game. Branigan got his rhythm back over the final two frames giving up just one hit the rest of the way and striking out a total of five batters. On the offensive side, Saint Xavier had plenty of highlights with nine hits leading to eight runs. Junior catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and freshman outfielder Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) each posted two hits in the game. The Cougars scored a run in each of the first three innings before doubling their run total to go ahead, 6-0, in the bottom of the fourth thanks in part to a two-RBI single by Maziur. SXU would plate two more runs over the final two frames to secure the big conference win.
Saint Xavier (12-12-1 overall/6-0 CCAC) will take on NCAA Division II Lewis University (Ill.) at Ferrell Field on Wednesday, March 30. The nine-inning affair is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
