CHICAGO - Sophomore outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) combined for 33 kills on the day as the Saint Xavier University men's volleyball team split a pair of Friday matches against Siena Heights University (Mich.) and Carthage College (Wis.). The Cougars (7-15 overall) won a tough match with Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate Conference (MAMVIC) foe Siena Heights in five sets (21-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-27 and 16-14) at Palos Courts in Palos Heights, Ill. SXU then headed back to the Shannon Center, its home arena, to take on the Red Men of Carthage, but could not pick up the non-conference victory against the NCAA Division III foe falling in four sets (27-25, 16-25, 22-25 and 20-25).
In the opening match against the Saints, Porter finished with team-bests of 19 kills, 12 digs and four service aces. Freshman middle blocker Mike Capone (Lyons, Ill./Morton CC/Morton) also had a solid outing for the Cougars finishing the match with 12 kills and eight total blocks (two solos). Freshman right side hitter Evan Muys (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) led SXU with 10 total blocks (all block assists), while freshman setter Kevin Maxwell (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) posted 50 assists. Saint Xavier tallied an impressive attack percentage of .556 in the second set to cruise to the 25-13 win.
The Cougars carried some of its winning momentum into their first set with Carthage taking an early lead in the match with a 27-25 victory. However, the Red Men got some momentum of their own and won the next three sets to decide the match. Porter led the offensive attack for SXU again with 14 kills, while freshman outside hitter Justin Cousin (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest) had 10 kills and two service aces. Maxwell finished with 43 assists, while freshman libero Johnathan Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton CC/Morton) led the team defensively with eight digs.
Saint Xavier (7-14 overall/6-6 MAMVIC) heads to Dubuque, Iowa, tomorrow to take part in the Clarke University (Iowa) Tri-Match. The Cougars will take on the host Crusaders in the 2 p.m. match and then finish up with a 5 p.m. match against Park University (Mo.).
