CHICAGO - Sophomore
outside hitter Aaron Porter (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) finished with
a match-best 22 kills, but it was one of the few bright spots for Saint Xavier
University Wednesday night. The Cougars
(6-14 overall) dropped a key Mid-America Men's Volleyball Intercollegiate
Conference (MAMVIC) match to visiting Robert Morris University (Ill.) in five
sets at the Shannon Center in Chicago.
RMU won the opening set, 25-22, before SXU claimed the next two by
scores of 25-15 and 25-20. However, the
Cougars dropped the fourth set, 25-22, and the Eagles took advantage quickly in
the fifth and deciding set riding an early lead to a 15-10 victory.
the loss, Saint Xavier drops to 5-6 in the Eastern Division of the MAMVIC,
while Robert Morris improves to 2-11 in the league and 4-15 overall. The Eagles were led offensively by freshman
outside hitter Andrew Gleason, who finished with 16 kills on the night. SXU freshman setter Kevin Maxwell (Chicago,
Ill./Brother Rice) tallied 45 assists in the match, while freshman libero
Johnathan Hernandez (Berwyn, Ill./Morton CC/Morton) led the Cougars with 25
digs. Maxwell and sophomore middle
blocker Joe Mooney (Palos Heights, Ill./Shepard) each finished with four total
blocks for SXU as well.
Xavier (6-14 overall/5-6 MAMVIC) hosts a pair of matches on Friday, March 25,
taking on MAMVIC foe Siena Heights University (Mich.) at 3 p.m. at Palos Courts
in Palos Heights, Ill., before matching up against non-conference foe Carthage
College (Wis.) at 7 p.m. at the Shannon Center.
