CHICAGO - Paced by nice outings on the mound by senior right-hander Ken Hurta
(Midlothian, Ill./Bremen) and freshman right-hander Scott Vachon (Plainfield,
Ill./Plainfield North), the Saint Xavier University baseball team had little
trouble picking up a pair of shutout victories over Illinois Tech in
Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) action Wednesday afternoon at
Richard R. Ferrell Memorial Field in Chicago.
The Cougars (11-12-1 overall/5-0 CCAC) won the first game, 10-0, in six
innings with Hurta throwing the first four innings and allowing just one hit
and no walks with three strikeouts.
Vachon threw all seven innings of game two, an 8-0 decision for SXU, and
gave up five hits and a walk with six strikeouts.
The Cougar offense belted out 13 hits in Wednesday's opening game with
junior catcher Jim Pipolo (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and sophomore first
baseman Mike Pokers (Lansing, Ill./Andrean) each going 2-for-3 at the plate
with two RBI. A
two-RBI single by Pipolo gave SXU a 2-0 lead after the first inning and a
sacrifice fly by red-shirt junior infielder Austin Lehmann (Shorewood,
Ill./Minooka) extended the lead to 3-0 in the second frame. Saint Xavier would plate five more runs in
the third inning highlighted by a two-RBI single by Lehmann. After scoring a run off an error in the
fourth, the Cougars would end the game at 10-0 in the bottom of the sixth with
a RBI double by Pokers. Hurta goes to
3-2 overall this season with the win.
Pokers, senior right fielder Joe Dispensa (Chicago, Ill./St. Joseph's
College/Mesa CC/St. Rita) and sophomore outfielder Tony O'Shea (Valparaiso,
Ind./Mount Carmel) each tallied a pair of hits in the nightcap. O'Shea also finished with two runs scored and
two RBI, while Pokers added a run scored and two RBI as well. SXU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off a
RBI single by Dispensa and a sacrifice fly by junior designated hitter Brett Ratajczak (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic).
A two-RBI double by Pokers kicked off the scoring in a three-run, third
inning for the Cougars to extend the lead to 5-0. Lehmann would post a RBI single in the fifth
frame to make the score, 6-0. O'Shea
would wrap up the game's scoring with a two-RBI triple in the bottom of the
sixth. Vachon improves to 2-1 on the
season with the victory on the mound.
