Gary, Ind. - Behind a pair of solid starts by senior right-hander Joe Branigan (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield South) and sophomore right-hander Mike Stirling (Thornton, Ill./Mount Carmel), Saint Xavier University completed its series sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) foe Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) Saturday at Calumet High School in Gary, Ind. The Cougars (9-12-1 overall/3-0 CCAC) won the first game of the day, 4-0, and then posted 16 hits in game two for a 10-1 victory. Branigan gave up just one hit and a walk over all seven innings of game one en route to his complete-game shutout performance. He also finished with four strikeouts. Stirling looked sharp as well allowing six hits, an earned run and a walk with four strikeouts over his seven innings of work on the mound.

After four scoreless frames to open the first game, SXU got on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the fifth inning highlighted by a RBI double by senior center fielder Anthony Maziur (Oak Forest, Ill./Northern Illinois University/Oak Forest). A RBI single by senior right fielder Joe Dispensa (Chicago, Ill./St. Joseph's College/Mesa CC/St. Rita) in the seventh inning plated another insurance run for the Cougars. Branigan improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory. Maziur and Dispensa led the Saint Xavier offense with two hits and a RBI apiece.

The Cougar offense continued to warm up in the nightcap with Dispensa and freshman left fielder Chris Klein (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) each leading the way with three hits. Dispensa finished the game with three RBI, while Klein tallied three runs scored. Freshman first baseman Brad Myjak (Tinley Park, Ill./Mount Carmel) also had a nice showing at the plate in game two going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. The Cougars led 3-1 after two innings of play and then scored seven unanswered runs, including six in the top of the fifth, to cruise to the big victory. Stirling stays perfect on the season with a 2-0 record on the year.
