CHICAGO - It was a good day for the Saint Xavier University
softball pitching staff as freshman Megan Nonnemacher (Bloomington, Ill./Normal
Community) and junior Nicole Derezinski (St. John, Ind./Andrean) both posted
shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Clarke University (Iowa) Saturday afternoon
at SXU Softball Field in Chicago. The
Cougars won their home opener by scores of 2-0 and 8-0 (six innings) to improve
to 11-5 overall this spring. Nonnemacher
threw all seven innings of the first game and gave up just four hits and no
walks with 10 strikeouts to improve to 6-1 on the season. Derezinski also allowed just four hits with a
walk and four strikeouts to go to 2-2 this year.
After a scoreless
first inning, SXU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when
senior first baseman Courtney Murphy (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) led off with
a walk and later scored on a RBI single by senior second baseman Brittany Hannigan (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg). The
Cougars added an insurance run in the third when a sacrifice fly by sophomore third
baseman Kate Mollohan (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew) plated freshman left fielder
Ariel Hinton (Crawfordsville, Ind./Crawfordsville) from third base. Saint Xavier needed just four hits in the first
game to pick up the victory.
The SXU offense
gave its pitching staff plenty of help in the nightcap belting out 13 hits,
including three doubles, en route to the eight-run win in six innings. Junior shortstop Ashley Hunter (Metamora,
Ill./Metamora) led the offensive attack going 3-for-4 at the plate with a
double, two runs scored and a RBI.
Hinton put Saint Xavier ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first frame
when she hit a RBI double to center field.
The Cougar bats exploded for seven hits and six runs in the third inning
to push the lead to 7-0. Hinton then ended
the game an inning early when she brought home Hunter on a RBI single to left
field in the sixth. Hinton and Murphy
both finished the second game with two RBI apiece.
Xavier (11-5 overall) opens Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC)
play on Thursday, March 24, with a road doubleheader against rival University
of St. Francis (Ill.). The first game of
the pair starts at 3 p.m. in Joliet, Ill.
